Speech Salvation

Some are called to speech-recognition; others have it thrust upon them.

Just when it seemed like I might never work again, I went to a friend's husband's 50th birthday party. Between all the black balloons and the Depends, I started chatting with Mary. Mary is one of those rare Mother Teresa-esque people who truly are always looking to help others. As I driveled on about not being able to find a job, what was I going to do… blah, blah, blah… Mary was formulating a plan.

At the time, Mary was working for our mutual friend and party hostess, Renee Griffith. Three years prior, Renee had developed carpal tunnel and deQuervain's in both her hands and arms, ending her career as a senior staff accountant. While this was a life altering, intensely painful, bummer for Renee, it turned out to be an amazing stroke of luck for me! (I know, that not only sounds heartless but also contains a bad pun. Please feel free to fill in the descriptive noun or adjective you feel suits me: ________ )

The ever resilient Renee created Zephyr-TEC as her self-employment plan. Originally meant to be an accounting company run by speech-recognition, it morphed a speech-recognition training company. After being in business a little over a year, Renee was becoming increasingly successful and busy. Mary proposed that I be given a job as the receptionist and taught how to use speech software. Renee accepted.

And so, relatively late in life, I began my first office job... disconnecting callers, misfiling, mucking up shipping and locking up computers. Thank God for Cronyism!
